Paddy Considine has experienced deteriorating health as King Viserys since his character was introduced to the series in the opening of House of the Dragon. Across four episodes, we’ve seen the King suffer cuts and other afflictions from the Iron Throne due to his sensitive skin tissue and bones becoming more fragile. During the fourth episode, Viserys is seen with welts and other marks covering his back, a sign of his rapidly declining health.
The actor recently appeared on Entertainment Weekly’s West of Westeros podcast and confirmed his character’s affliction. His illness is, in fact, leprosy, causing lesions that multiply on the King. He said, “He actually has a form of leprosy. His body is deteriorating, his bones are deteriorating. He’s not really old. Her character is under 50 on the show, meaning her declining health is not due to old age. “He’s still a young man in there. He just, unfortunately, has this thing taking over his body. It becomes a metaphor for being king, and the stress and strain that puts on you, and what it does to you physically, what it does to you mentally. »
Fans have wondered what was causing Viserys’ health issues since the first episode of House of the Dragon but the disease will no longer be a mystery.
Viserys faced immense pressure for four years House of the Dragon Episodes
Being a king isn’t easy, and Paddy Considine’s character deals with the consequences of sitting on the Iron Throne in House of the Dragon. Viserys is constantly placed in tough spots on the show, only halfway through the first season. So far, he’s been forced to choose between his wife and a newborn baby, with both meetings their deaths. Additionally, he remarried a new queen, faced a war caused by his brother Daemon, and named his daughter heir, which had never been done in Westeros until then. Additionally, his brother, daughter, and young son Aegon all have a “right” to the throne, leaving the question of succession up in the air.
Of course, outside parties are constantly trying to fight their way to the throne, with Otto Hightower plotting to have his grandson claim the throne through his daughter’s marriage to the king. Additionally, all the lords of the realm attempt to marry Viserys’ daughter, Rhaenyra, the current heiress. If something is obvious in the game of thrones universe is that the king is never quiet.
