A new The Karate Kid the film is in the works, courtesy of Sony Pictures. The studio has officially announced the return of the franchise to theaters by dating a new installment in the series, soberly baptized The Karate Kidfor June 7, 2024. Per Deadline, the announcement comes with several other release date announcements, such as Sony’s Superhero Movies Kraven the hunter (October 6, 2023) and Madame Web (February 16, 2024).
No information has been revealed about the new The Karate Kid movie, so it’s currently unclear who will appear in the movie or what the plot might be. It is possible that this is an extension of the original The Karate Kid universe, which consisted of four films with the sequel series Cobra Kaï. Some Cobra Kaï cast members have teased that the show may soon be fleshed out in a more cinematic universe, and this new movie could be one of those plans coming to life.
“The thing that’s been created, there’s kind of this Karate Kid cinematic universe now where Cobra Kaï is, you know, central to that and when that day comes for a landing, there are other areas to tap into,” Ralph Macchio recently told Comicbook.com. “I mean, whatever… Is there a Miyagi origin story?” is there Cobra Kaï prequel before The Karate Kid? Are there any spinoffs with some of the young actors of these characters? Who knows? But we’re not done until we’re given the opportunity to really integrate it. As long as it evolves organically, these guys writing the show really have their finger on it. »
Macchio co-star William Zabka also told the outlet, “There’s an endgame. [for Cobra Kai]. Everything points to a place on the map for sure. It’s a question of how much [seasons] we will, but there is definitely an endgame. We’re going to end the series, and then I think we’re going to do a movie trilogy. »
Cobra Kai breathed new life into the Karate Kid
Of course, the success of Cobra Kaï must have played a big part in Sony bringing The Karate Kid back to the cinema with a new film. The series, which follows the original trilogy and The Next Karate Kid, features a mix of legacy characters and newcomers to the story. This seems to be exactly what fans wanted, as the series has been hugely popular for years. At this point, Sony must be hoping the interest trickles down to high ticket sales for the franchise’s return to the big screen.
“That’s what we love the most about the franchise: anyone who watches our show sees how many characters come in and there’s a part of us that never wants to stop,” co-creator Jon Hurwitz recently told Total Film, teasing the upcoming spinoff. “We have a place where everything goes, but that doesn’t mean the world has to stop there. We have many ideas to continue [the universe] and keeping the The Karate Kid vibes going through other stories and other shows and different formats for that. »
You can watch all five seasons of Cobra Kaï on Netflix.
