Chris Pratt’s worst film has been at the top of the Amazon Prime movie rankings, according to FlixPatrolfor the last week, and no, it’s not Passengers. In fact if you judge a film based off of total box office, this is a massive success, but that misses the complete picture that made this specific film a dismal failure. Jurassic World: Dominion was supposed to be the grand conclusion to the franchise by bringing together the original stars with the new generation in a raucous finale that was instead about genetically modified insects.

Chris Pratt joined the Jurassic Park franchise with the long awaited fourth film, Jurassic Worldas the raptor trainer Owen Grady. Bryce Dallas Howard demonstrated how to run away from a T-Rex while wearing business casual heels in the same film as Claire Dearing, the theme park’s manager. The two formed the core of the second trilogy, joined in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom by Isabella Sermon’s Maisie Lockwood, a genetic clone of her deceased “mother.”

The third film in the Jurassic World trilogy, Dominionbrought back stars of the original trilogy Sam Neil as Dr. Alan Grant, Laura Dern as Dr. Ellie Statler, and unexpected sex symbol Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Ian Malcolm. The two groups of characters are brought to Biosyn headquarters through different routes, the original characters are investigating genetically modified locusts capable of destroying the world’s food supply, while the second group of Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard is pursuing a kidnapped Maisie.

Not mentioned in that very brief plot explanation is the word “dinosaur.” Amazingly, in a film franchise based entirely around the promise of showing enormous dinosaurs on screen, the final film (so far) had a plot that could have been resolved with zero dinosaurs. Chris Pratt’s leading man charisma tries to carry the film, but the potential tease at the end of Fallen Kingdom with a world overrun by prehistoric beasts is only teased at during the two and a half hour running time.

Jurassic World: Dominion was the worst performing of the second trilogy, bringing in only $376 million domestically with a massive overseas haul of $626 million. While it broke a billion at the box office poor word of mouth kept it from having the legs of its predecessors and the financial success was mostly frontloaded before Top Gun: Maverick came out and blew away every other film for months. Keeping the domestic total in perspective, Chris Pratt’s sci-fi dud Passengers made just $76 million less than Dominion.

Over on Rotten Tomatoes the film is only 29% fresh with a 77% audience score. Going by the comments from the general public, it’s the joy of seeing the original cast that boosted the audience marks, compared to growing fatigue over Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. Having finished the storyline from the first Jurassic Park makes Dominion the likely final film in the franchise for a long, long time.

Chris Pratt may have a pair of billion dollar movies later this year when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 brings a close to the story of the unlikeliest group of heroes, and then there’s a certain video game adaptation. Super Mario Bros. featuring Pratt as Mario Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi Mario, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach is the long-awaited movie that’s accurate to the classic Nintendo franchise. 2023 is shaping up to be a huge year for the Parks and Recreation star.
