Rachel Williams Is Suing Netflix Defamation For Inventing Anna

Real Rachel Williams filed a “defamation lawsuit” against Netflix for its representation of Inventing Anna, calling it “unethical” and “disloyal.”

The TV show is based on Jessica Pressler’s piece “Maybe She Had So Much Money She Just Lost Track of It,” which appeared in the December 2018 issue of New York Magazine.

The article explored the scams of Anna Sorokin, who pretended to be a wealthy heiress and conned banks, hotels, and prominent New York society figures to enjoy opulent dinners and vacations without paying a dime while also being on the verge of obtaining a multimillion loan for her exclusive club and art foundation.

In the nine-part series, Williams is portrayed by actress Kate Lowes, who is described by Netflix as “a natural-born follower whose blind love of Anna almost destroys her career, her credit, and her life.”

According to recent sources, the former picture editor sued on August 29 and claimed that her representation was “unethical, greedy, snobbish, and disloyal.”

Williams’ lawyer said in documents obtained by Variety that since the release of Inventing Anna, Williams has seen severe online criticism.

According to Alexander Rufus-Isaacs, “If you want to build a character on a real person and you want to make them a baddie, don’t use their real name.”

“I wish artists could comprehend that,” They can’t use a real person’s name to create a bad character unless everything they say is unquestionably true.

The series’ Anna Delvey/Sorokin, played by Ozark actor Julia Garner, was imprisoned in 2017 for her financial crimes but was released after four years in February 2021.

Sorokin was born and raised in Russia, then moved to Germany when he was seven years old. In 2013, he took a plane to New York.

Sorokin announced via Instagram stories that she would “gladly” make herself “available to testify to the accuracy” of Williams’ “depiction” in the wake of the news.

Netflix has Inventing Anna accessible for streaming.
