Star Trek’s Ensign Rutherford (voiced by Eugene Cordero) may be a Section 31 agent and not even know it. At the very least, his possible association with Starfleet’s most infamous group can be considered a . was strongly hinted at in the latest episode of Star Trek: Lower Deck, In this week’s episode, “Reflections,” the cybernetic ensign makes lots of surprising revelations about his past, including a covert surgery he’s had at some point.

In “Reflections”, Rutherford’s cybernetic implant is working and giving him terrifying nightmares, so Tandy (voiced by Noel Wells) sees if clearing his memory cache will help. Instead, another personality of Rutherford—a younger, ruder, jerk version—emerges. Fortunately Tandy and Lt. Shax (voiced by Fred Tatasiore) notice something and later lull Rutherford into unconsciousness, where he encounters his younger self in his “mindscape”.

While going back and forth with his younger self, we learn that some of the memories he lost include a time when he used to design ships for illegal races in the Romulan neutral zone. The older and younger Rutherford begin a virtual race in their shared minds to decide who will be dominant, with the older and friendlier Rutherford winning. But before he wakes up, the Star Trek hero has visions of three people—their faces hidden by shadows, though at least one is wearing a Starfleet badge—discussing his memory in the same way we do in Section 31. Looking forward to talking to the workers.

The episode ends without Rutherford finding out that a Starfleet officer was overseeing his procedure, but it looks like we’ll hear more about how the engineer lost his memory down the road. Well, we know the crew of Cerritos will visit Deep Space Nine sometime this season, and it was Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Who introduced the secret section 31. The group has since featured in all franchises, including in . also includes enterprise, Searchand even the 2013 Calvin Time movie Star Trek Into Darkness,

Undoubted, Star Trek: Lower Deck Its obvious Section 31 signals may be messed with. With the show’s focus on humor and its absurd tone, it likely has as much—if not all—of Way More likely, the writers are teasing fans with Section 31, but will instead unveil some parody version of the group.

Of course, if it turns out that Rutherford is a member of the group, he won’t be the first regular Star Trek character to be unveiled as a Section 31 agent later. Star Trek: Enterprise Fans learned that Lieutenant Malcolm Reed (Dominic Keating) was a member and had been in contact with the group later in the series.

On the way to focus on Section 31 is a possible Star Trek series led by Michelle Yeoh (everything everywhere together), in which she will reprise her role as the Mirror Universe version of Filippa Georgiou. There has been little news about the series over the past year or two, although it may be one of the Trek series confirmed to be in development.
