Don Cheadle Says Armor Wars Will Stay True To Its Comic Book Tradition

When Kevin Feige took the stage and revealed all of the Phase Five line up at San Diego Comic-Con, it got fans excited with the biggest hype. The announcements of Daredevil: Born Again, Love at first sight, Captain America: New World Order and new avengers the films made highlights, but among them, an important project was not mentioned. When Marvel’s Disney+ original, Armor Wars, was ignored at the SDCC, rumors spread that the show may have been canceled or suspended indefinitely.

But at D23, Kevin Feige drew the curtains on the show’s status. Armor Wars will begin filming next year after post-production work on Secret Invasion is finished. Armor Wars will bring to life Tony Stark’s worst fear – his technology is falling into the wrong hands. And with him gone, it would be up to his best friend and assistant to ensure that Iron Man’s legacy was not tarnished.

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Don Cheadle revealed that this story in Armor Wars would be directly adapted from the comic book series of the same name. Speaking of the series, Cheadle said,

If you know anything about the lore and you’ve read the comics, you understand that this is a series that was built around the release of Tony’s Stark Tech and Rhodey taking it to pick up that tech from the bad hands, bad actors in whose hands it is.

The story was first featured in issue seven Iron Man #225-232, written by Bob Layton and David Michelinie. Of course, the series won’t feature the exact storyline, much like other Marvel Cinematic Universe entries, which tend to go their own way while sticking to the comic book snippets. Cheadle also knows that Armor Wars will be no exception and that the comic book tradition will also be revitalized for its show. He added,

Like Marvel does, it’s also an opportunity to take the mythology and flip it a bit and come up with different ways to tell the story, so it does and has done so in spades.

Cheadle has embodied the character since iron man 2, taking on the role of Terrence Howard. Since then, he’s been a trusted confidant to Tony and helped neutralize crucial existential threats like in Age of Ultronthe Civil warthe infinity war, and the End of Game. We have since seen Rhodey as a guest in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. We will see him in an essential role in the next Disney+ series, Secret Invasion. Armor Wars will continue Rhodey’s story like never before, with War Machine at the center of a new war against the villains.

In the interview, the actor also shed light on the show’s impact on his character’s story. Cheadle revealed that Armor Wars would likely help audiences learn more about Rhodey’s backstory and allow them to dive into his new arc with him. He said:

What’s great is that there will be so many opportunities to learn a lot about him and for him to learn about himself and for us to hopefully really get to understand what drives him. .

It would be a perfect opportunity to see War Machine in action, learn more, and see him create another of his classic hero stories to tell at future parties.

Armor Wars will begin production in 2023. The series has been postponed to the MCU’s Phase Five slate, meaning the show will take place somewhere in Phase Six, bringing it closer to the culmination of the multiverse saga.
