The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke discusses the ways that Barack Obama enjoys watching his Prime Video series and the show’s creators consider the show continuously.
The former U.S president Barack Obama previously listed Prime Video’s The Boys as one of his most-loved shows. The thought of one of our leaders watching the gritty drama is an idea that the show’s creator Eric Kripke and the crew considers when they create the show.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Kripke was asked the extent to which he could be sure that Obama is watching The Boys. “I have no reason not to believe it,” Kripke stated. “I mean, he didn’t have to put us on his list! It’d be weird if this was the show he chose to front about because it’s kind of a show that is delivered to you in a brown paper bag [laughs]. You have to be a little brave to say that you watch this show, so I can’t imagine him lying about it.”
The showrunner continued to say, “More than once in editing and post-production of the penis explosion sequence [in this season], this thought has been brought up numerous times. For instance, “Can you imagine President Obama watching this sequence today? And what is he thinking?'” I would like to see us make that list for the second time. However, I can know why we might create the “Dear God I’ve made a huge error” list. I feel like it could go either way.”
It was in the year 2020 that Obama put The Boys — along with Watchmen, The Good Place, and Better Call Saul — as one of his top shows to watch during the long period triggered by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. In particular, the show was praised by Obama The Boys and Watchmen for “how they turn superhero conventions on their heads to lay bare issues of race, capitalism, and the distorting effects of corporate power and mass media.”
Since the show’s debut, Prime Video’s superhero comedy franchise has released a new season and has also spawned another spinoff project that is the animated anthology program The Boys Presents: Diabolical!, with a minimum of one more show, The Boys Presents: Varsity, which is currently in the process of production. The spinoff that was released and the third season in progress has provided viewers with larger and more violent scenes, for instance, those in the “exploding penis” scene Kripke mentions in the previous episode.
The show’s creator previously said that the grisly scene was a result of a popular theory and meme that involves Avengers: Endgame characters Ant-Man and the central villain Thanos. He explained that “That sequence started with, ‘We need Boys to fight a superhero.’ So then we ask, ‘What big superhero haven’t we done yet?’ Someone says, ‘We haven’t done Ant-Man.’ And then someone else says, ‘There’s that meme of Ant-Man climbing up Thanos’ butt and blowing him up. So we should do that. We should give the audience the thing that Marvel can’t give to them.'”
The latest episodes from The Boys Season 3 are released each Friday on Prime Video.
